The University of Wisconsin-Madison will aim to increase career opportunities for students pursuing doctoral degrees in humanities with a $1.1 million grant, according to a university release.
The grant, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will fund “Engaging the Humanities,” a new program developed to find career opportunities for humanities doctoral students outside the normal teaching options.
To create these opportunities, the initiative will center on the creation of a graduate certificate in public humanities, offering opportunities for faculty in humanities to share their work outside the university and designing public humanities graduate fellowships, according to the release.
"The humanities provide us with the essential context we need to connect vital yet seemingly disparate parts of the human experience," Chancellor David Ward said in the release. "This grant reaffirms the university's commitment to supporting the talented scholars who help us understand our world."
