2014 U.S. News rankings recognize UW-Madison as leading institution

The University of Wisconsin-Madison tied for 41st in the U.S. News and World Report’s latest ranking of 270 national doctoral universities, according to a university news release.

The university also tied for 11th, among public institutions, down from 10th place last year, in the 2014 edition of “Best Colleges,” the release said.

The report also recognized the university for the undergraduate experience it provides, according to the release. Peers nominated institutions with strong programs in certain academic service areas, and UW-Madison was one of the most frequently mentioned for its undergraduate research and creative projects in addition to its learning communities.

“The reputation of our university's quality and value continues to grow,” Provost Paul DeLuca, Jr. said in the release. “Rankings are one measure among many, but we’re pleased to be among this group.”

The 2014 rankings de-emphasized certain measures, such as student selectivity and class rank and focused more on retention and graduation rate as measures, according to the release.
