University photographer captures new student’s first day in real time

University of Wisconsin-Madison freshman Molly Sequin began her first day of classes Tuesday, but unlike her fellow Badgers, Molly’s day was documented live on the university’s website.

University Communications photographer Jeff Miller snapped and posted pictures of Sequin throughout her first day of classes in “Following Molly: A new student’s first day,” as part of an effort to tell a familiar story in a fresh way, according to University Communications Director John Lucas.

Sequin, whose three sisters are also UW-Madison students, said she has always loved the university, so she was excited to participate.

“It was awesome to be part of this and let everyone see the story through my eyes,” Sequin said.

Miller said he reached out to the Center for the First Year Experience with the idea, and they suggested a handful of students who demonstrated an interest in engaging with the campus, which included Sequin.

According to Lucas, people have been responsive to the story, which received nearly 2,400 likes on Facebook and 700 tweets.

Lucas said in the past, a photographer may have taken one picture of a student in a lecture hall to post on the university website and social media, but updating the website in real time gave the story new appeal.

“It’s infusing a lot of what we’ve done in the past with a little bit of a new spirit,” Lucas said.
