University police officer injured in motorcycle accident

An SUV struck an on-duty University of Wisconsin-Madison police officer riding his motorcycle at the intersection of North Charter and Regent Streets Saturday morning, according to a press release.

UWPD spokesperson Marc Lovicott said in the release that the officer “flew over the handlebars” upon impact and hit his head on the street.

He was treated for minor injuries to his right side at a local hospital and released by late morning, according to the release.

Lovicott said in the release the officer’s helmet saved his life.

The officer was traveling to pick up the Tennessee Tech football team to escort them to Camp Randall Stadium, where they were scheduled to compete against the Badger football team at 11:00 a.m., according to the release. The Madison Police Department cited the driver of the SUV.
