Board of Regents approves raises for 10 UW System chancellors

The full Board of Regents approved a resolution in a closed session Thursday to increase the salaries of chancellors at 10 of the 14 UW institutions.

A Board of Regents committee also passed a policy that could broaden the compensation ranges of UW officials. The UW System President position would especially see a substantial increase in maximum salary.

Chancellor Rebecca Blank was not one of the chancellors who received a salary increase. Her $495,000 salary in 2013-’14 is twice as high as almost every other UW System chancellor’s.

In the full board, regents approved a total of $80,000 in salary adjustments for the 10 chancellors, ranging from $6,000 to $10,500 per year.

The Board’s Business and Finance Committee also approved a policy to broaden the salary ranges for the UW System President, all chancellors and the UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee provosts.

The policy will still need to be approved by the full Board of Regents Friday.

The changes would increase the minimum and maximum salaries system officials can receive, raising the ranges between 2.5 and 39 percent.

The UW System President position held by Kevin Reilly, who will step down in January, would see a range increase of 24.6 percent, with the maximum rising from $440,154 to $598,500.

The compensation range of UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank would go up 2.5 percent, with a new maximum salary of $584,250. The position currently has a maximum salary of $522,500.

The medians of adjusted ranges are set to 95 percent of the national peer median salaries, which the policy states is because of a lower cost of living in Wisconsin.

The new policy would give the system greater flexibility in setting compensation based on experience level, years on the job and other factors, Board of Regents President Michael Falbo said in a statement.

“Benchmarking these ranges against real market data, and doing so on a regular schedule, makes good sense,” the statement said. Our UW System institutions need strong leadership. That means keeping the effective leaders we have today, and ensuring that future searches attract top talent.”
