The salary ranges of certain University of Wisconsin System officials will be adjusted due to two policies the Board of Regents approved Friday.
The Board unanimously chose to recommend broadening the compensation ranges of UW officials for the 2013-’15 biennium. The board is required by law to set pay ranges for certain UW System positions, a fact several regents brought up in response to concerns that the ranges were set too high.
“I think we should remind people that what we’re doing here is a statutory requirement,” Regent Margaret Farrow said.
The new guidelines will affect the UW System President, all chancellors and the UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee provosts. Individuals in these positions can now be compensated within 80 and 120 percent of national peer medians. The previous ranges were set between 90 and 110 percent.
UW System President Kevin Reilly said broadening the ranges allows for more competitive salaries, which fits into previous conversations about making the Board of Regents a “watchdog” for the state.
“The most important watchdog function that this board has is to ensure the quality and the reputation of the University of Wisconsin,” Reilly said.
