Gov. Scott Walker drops Capitol protest permit requirements

The American Civil Liberties Union announced Tuesday Gov. Scott Walker’s office is dropping its requirements for groups to obtain permits to protest inside the Capitol.

The ACLU reached a settlement in its lawsuit against the Department of Administration, first filed in February, for violating First Amendment rights by requiring groups to obtain permits before being allowed to protest within the Capitol building, according to an ACLU statement.

Under the new rules, groups must notify the DOA of a gathering of 12 or more people two business days before the event takes place. The notification may be sent by phone, email, in person or by a state form, according to the statement. There is no limit on the number of notifications groups and individuals can submit.
