Sustainability committee continues discussion on ‘green fund’

The Associated Students of Madison Sustainability Committee met Wednesday to discuss the development of their current campaigns, including the possible formation of a “green fund.”

The committee further discussed its approach to the fund’s financing. The “green fund” would be a collection of money that could be used for environmentally friendly student organizations and students to apply for grants, according to Sustainability Committee Chair Will Mulhern.

The committee also discussed two possible options for financing the fund, one through ASM’s internal budget and another through a referendum. The referendum would add one to two dollars to students’ segregated fees.

The committee’s tentative plan is to apply for funding through the ASM’s internal budget, according to Mulhern. The council may decide to change their approach to the funding sometime in the near future.

“I would rather do the internal budget this year and try to pass the referendum next year,” Mulhern said.

Additionally, the committee discussed the Smoke-Free Initiative, which is a partnership between ASM and Colleges Against Cancer. The goal is to reduce cigarette usage and possibly eliminate it on campus.

Committee members are still trying to decide if they are going to formally adopt the Smoke-Free Initiative as one of their campaigns, Mulhern said.

Members also discussed plans for the Sustainability Fair, which is scheduled for Nov. 14 from 5-7 p.m. in the Educational Building.
