The state Legislature is discussing a bill that would subject state private voucher schools to the same report card system currently used to rate public schools starting in 2015.
The Wisconsin Parental Choice Program, which provides families with state funds to use toward private school tuition, exempts private voucher schools from scores issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
The bill also seeks to increase accountability in state schools by subjecting poorly performing schools to potential removal from the voucher program.
The program is projected to cost the state $3 million to enroll 512 students in private schools in the 2013-’14 academic year.
According to a report by the agency, 79 percent of students enrolling in private schools through the voucher program were already enrolled in a private school in 2012.
