A committee to help select the next provost of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has begun its search for Paul DeLuca’s successor, after he announced in June he would be returning to the faculty, according to a news release.
The provost is the principal academic officer of the university, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the curriculum, as well as student and faculty life on campus. He or she serves as the chancellor’s partner in executing and communicating a vision for the future of the university.
The provost also works closely with deans and other campus leadership, such as faculty, staff and students to design and implement programs, as well as convey the university’s threefold mission of education, research and outreach. In the absence of the chancellor, the provost assumes the role of the chief executive of the university.
The committee is chaired by Joan Schmit, professor at the Wisconsin School of Business. There are also members from several different schools and colleges on the committee, as well as a student representative.
The team expects a new provost will be in place sometime during the spring semester.
