A 20-year-old man was injured and sent to a local hospital Wednesday after being impaled by a fence post in a car accident, according to a police report.
Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain said the 20-year-old Madison resident was in the passenger seat when the car drove off the road along Oakridge Avenue. The vehicle hit a chain-link fence before crashing into a tree when the man was struck by the fence post, according to DeSpain.
According to a police report, Madison police received phone calls at approximately 8:20 p.m. before arriving on scene at the intersection of Oakridge and Maple Avenues where they found the passenger impaled by the post in his left upper body.
The passenger is in stable condition at the hospital, according to the report.
The report stated factors in the accident included the speed and road conditions at the time. The driver, 21-year-old Stephen Bets, was arrested and charged with reckless driving.
DeSpain said the driver sustained no injuries.
