The University of Wisconsin-Madison Associated Students of Madison press office released a statement Thursday saying the organization will be looking to UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank for a commitment to aiding low-income students.
Blank attended a summit in Washington, D.C. last week to work with fellow higher education leaders to find ways to address the lack of financial aid currently given to low-income students.
ASM leaders said they are concerned that while Blank touched on general ideas, she does not have any concrete initiatives set in motion, according to the release.
“There is absolutely more that UW can and should be doing, and as student leaders we expect specific goals from UW leadership,” the statement said.
ASM leaders said they continually focus on striving for “affordable and accessible higher education,” and said they hope to see definite plans and numbers from UW-Madison administration within the coming month.
“It’s not enough to promise a ‘portion’ of funds,” ASM said in the statement. “It’s not enough to promise ‘expansion.’ It’s not enough to promise ‘soon.’ We expect more than that from our University’s leadership. We need to be able to hold administration accountable, or these promises mean nothing.”
Blank was unavailable for comment at press time.
