The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced Friday Vice Chancellor for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Martin Cadwallader will retire from his current position and return to the faculty.
After serving in the position for nearly 13 years, Cadwallader will resume his role as a faculty member in the geography department in August, according to a statement.
"It has been both a privilege and a pleasure to lead the research and graduate education missions of such a great university," Cadwallader said in the statement.
During Cadwallader’s tenure, he helped create the Office of Research Policy and the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, as well as aided in making UW-Madison the third ranked research university in the U.S.
UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank commended Cadwallader’s work in expanding graduate school and research opportunities at the university.
Blank said she and the University Committee are looking to change the structure of leadership and fill the position with two separate people.
