State Sen. Kathleen Vinehout, D-Alma, announced Friday she will not enter the 2014 gubernatorial race due to injuries she received in a December car crash.
The potential Democratic challenger was involved in a car crash Dec. 9 that fractured her right arm in multiple places, a spokesperson from Vinehout’s office told The Daily Cardinal in December.
Vinehout said in a statement Friday the time needed to fully recover would prevent her from efficiently running her grassroots campaign.
“I will continue to work supporting the grassroots efforts of so many,” Vinehout said in the statement. “The vision we share for our state and our communities will not fade.”
Vinehout endorsed Mary Burke, the only remaining Democratic gubernatorial candidate, wishing her success in the November election.
In a statement, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Vinehout will remain a “vital force” in the Democratic Party.
Tate also credited Vinehout with establishing a grassroots base and facilitating discussion on progressive policies.
“Without question, Wisconsin is a better place with Kathleen Vinehout in public service, and we look forward to hearing her strong progressive voice around the state as she continues her recovery,” Tate said in the statement.
