A University of Wisconsin-Madison employee was killed after being hit by a Wisconsin Union delivery truck on Mendota Court near Lake Street Thursday morning, according to Madison police.
The woman, who was in her 60s, was walking behind the truck at approximately 10:30 a.m. when it backed up and struck her, according to a statement released by the university.
The woman was transported to a local hospital with “life-threatening” injuries but was later pronounced dead, according to Madison Police Department Spokesperson Joel DeSpain. The woman’s identity has not yet been released by the Dane County Medical Examiner, according to the university’s statement.
“We’re saddened by this tragic loss of a member of our community,” UW-Madison Provost Paul DeLuca said. “As we wait to learn more about what happened, we want our campus community to know that there are resources to support them in a difficult time.”
DeLuca said any students in need of counseling should contact University Health Services Counseling and Consultation Services at 608-265-5600. He also said any employees or faculty in need of counseling should contact the Employee Assistance Office at 608-263-2987.
MPD has assigned a traffic specialist to continue investigating the incident and more details will be released as they are available, DeSpain said.
