UW-Madison to remain open Monday, Tuesday

Despite warnings of extreme cold, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will remain open for instruction Monday and Tuesday, according to a university news release.

The National Weather Service forecasts extremely low temperatures and has issued a wind chill watch, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 35 degrees below zero Sunday night until Monday morning, and 50 degrees below zero Monday night into Tuesday morning.

The release urged students to remember to dress warmly. Madison Metro buses will be operating normally as a way to minimize time outside.

Additionally, all campus buildings will be open during regular operation hours to serve as warming areas, and free hot cocoa will be served at the top of Bascom Hill from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. or while supplies last.

Although all campus business will operate as usual, employees will not be disciplined if they deem it unsafe to go to work, and instructors are expected to be flexible with their attendance policies.
