Committee researches new campus budget model

University of Wisconsin-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank commended a budget review committee for doing an “excellent” job of researching options for a new budgetary model.

Blank created the Budget Model Review Committee—composed of faculty, staff and students—in September to explore the creation of a new model.

The committee identified strengths and weaknesses of the current budget, created distribution guidelines and found barriers and new approaches to budgeting.

While the university must continue increasing tax support and private philanthropy, “this alone will not suffice,” according to the report.

The committee said it is confident the university will “rise to the challenge” of creating a new model.

“To do otherwise is to choose a future in which UW-Madison no longer serves the

citizens of Wisconsin well and loses its position among the preeminent institutions of higher education in the nation and around the world,” the committee reported.

The report indicated this is an “initial step” in improving UW-Madison’s budgetary practices.
