Two University of Wisconsin-Madison professors joined the 2014 class of the National Academy of Engineering Thursday, according to a university news release.
Mistretta and Abbott are among 67 new members and 11 foreign associates elected to the NAE, one of the highest professional distinctions awarded to engineers, according to the release.
Charles Mistretta, a J.R. Cameron Professor of medical physics, radiology and biomedical engineering, conducts research in time-resolved angiography. His work has made medical imaging techniques, including X-ray technology, much more effective and efficient, the release said.
Mistretta earned his Ph.D. in high-energy physics from Harvard University in 1968, according to the statement.
The release said Nicholas Abbott, a John T. and Magdalen L. Sobota Professor of chemical and biological engineering, studies the molecules of materials that interact favorably with systems within living organisms.
According to the release, Abbott earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed postdoctoral research in chemistry at Harvard University.
