University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Pre-College Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence will receive the sixth annual Regents’ Diversity Award at Union South Friday, according to a university news release.
The award seeks to highlight the work of UW System individuals and organizations that aims to advance diversity and advocate for historically underrepresented groups, according to the release.
The PEOPLE Program, established in 1999, has emphasized supporting underrepresented students through pre-college programs to ensure a greater enrollment in higher education.
Jacqueline DeWalt, executive director of the PEOPLE Program, said in the release she maintains a strong focus on serving students of color and those from low-income backgrounds. This is in line with the university’s Division of Diversity’s central goal and emphasizes equality.
"We've been in partnership at the student level with parents, public schools, communities, members and organizations,” DeWalt said in the release. “We've had a partnership with faculty and staff across the UW-Madison campus.”
