UHS representative announces new alcohol policy

University Health Services Executive Director Sarah Van Orman outlined a new policy regarding alcohol service and consumption at university affiliated events at an Associated Students of Madison Shared Governance Committee meeting Thursday.

The policy came after the Event Alcohol Sales and Service Task Force, which was appointed in Spring 2012 and wrapped up its efforts in Spring 2013, reviewed policies previously in place.

The Task Force is made up of various experts on alcohol policy, as well as representatives of the campus community, including students and staff.

In regard to the old policies, Van Orman said they “were a bit of a mess” or “not well written.” Van Orman said the review of old policies also revealed a lack of penalties in the case of violation of the rules.

Van Orman said the Task Force outlined a number of suggestions for new rules and regulations that were eventually adopted in the final policy.

The first of these recommendations was to clarify what exactly comprises a “University Event.” Other suggestions mentioned a need to enhance the statement of campus alcohol philosophy and the need to define the responsibilities of university officials in regards to the alcohol service policies.

The Task Force emphasized a need for a clear process for obtaining alcohol service permits. These recommendations also look to ensure the enforcement of the legal drinking age.

Van Orman said the review called for the addition of the process and responsibility for policy review, communication and enforcement.

The new policy will become effective with the start of the spring semester.
