UW-Madison to join Digital Lab to advance U.S. manufacturing

The University of Wisconsin-Madison will team up with the Digital Lab for Manufacturing, an initiative funded in part through the U.S. Department of Defense, in an effort to create new technologies and improve the nation’s global competitive status in manufacturing, according to a Tuesday university news release.

The Digital Lab, a $320 million project, will aim to innovate digital tools to reduce manufacturing costs while increasing efficiency “from conception to production,” according to the release.

UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank said in the release the partnership will help maintain manufacturing’s key role in Wisconsin’s economic future.

"Through its partnership with the Digital Lab, UW-Madison will provide unique expertise to help ensure our state and national manufacturing industries remain competitive for generations to come," Blank said in the statement.

The UW-Madison team will be led by Lih-Sheng (Tom) Turng, a mechanical engineering professor. It will consist of experts in the fields spanning from engineering to computer sciences, focusing on intelligent machines, advanced manufacturing and advanced analysis, according to the release.
