The state Assembly passed bipartisan Senate Bill 300 Friday preventing cancer patients from paying more than $100 in copayments for a 30-day supply of oral chemotherapy drugs.
The Assembly passed the bill after Republicans scaled back the measure in response to Democratic opposition.
Gov. Scott Walker had pledged to support the measure, which was later amended by state Assembly Majority Leader Pat Strachota, R-West Bend, to ensure oral chemotherapy affordability, according to The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
"I chose one hundred dollars because I wanted to make sure people would not abandon their treatment," Strachota said in the article.
Cancer survivor and Leukemia & Lymphoma Wisconsin chapter chairman Paul Westrick said he agreed with the $100 limit.
"This is going to protect people,” Westrick said in the article. “This is a good deal.”
The Senate will have to pass the bill April 1 in its last floor session in order for it to become law.
