Madison police located a Wisconsin correctional officer’s stolen car Monday, with the help of a cinnamon roll left as evidence for the investigation.
According to an incident report, film obtained from a surveillance camera in a hotel parking lot on the 4800 block of East Washington Avenue showed the suspect to be a slender man, roughly 6 feet tall, wearing a tan jacket and jeans when approaching the vehicle at approximately 4:30 a.m.
Further investigation of the scene found a half-eaten cinnamon roll, which led police to a local restaurant that sells similar sweets, according to the report. After questioning store employees, Madison officers discovered the man arrived at the store in a Sun Prairie police vehicle.
After contacting the Sun Prairie Police Department, officers learned the suspect received a ride from Sun Prairie police to the restaurant after driving with a friend who was operating a separate vehicle while under the influence. The suspect received a ride to the restaurant but not before the SPPD recorded his name.
According to the report, the suspect’s name led officers to an address on Portland Parkway, where he was arrested. Madison police found the correctional officer’s car not far from the suspect’s home.
