State Rep. Brett Hulsey, D-Madison, sent an email to Gov. Scott Walker Thursday criticizing a statement made about BadgerCare on his website.
Hulsey responded to Walker’s claim that “BadgerCare is an important part of Wisconsin’s commitment to its citizens,” by saying that he is happy to work with Walker to help him keep his promise.
The email comes a day after Hulsey asked U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate Walker’s past efforts to take away health care from 17,000 Wisconsin residents.
Hulsey said Walker’s administration requested a waiver to the Social Security and Affordable Care Acts, claiming the state had a fiscal deficit when it did not.
According to the nonpartisan Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau, the state fund balance was $69.2 million in 2011-'12 and 68.2 million for 2012-'13 based on the cash-based account systems the state uses.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services permit states that provide certification of a budget deficit to fully eliminate eligibility for nondisabled, nonpregnant adults with incomes over 133 percent above the federal poverty line.
