State Rep. Erik Severson, R-Star Prairie, announced in a press release Monday he will not seek re-election in November.
Severson said the original reason he wanted to represent the 28th Assembly District was to address the state’s financial situation.
The representative served as chair of the Assembly Committee on Health and as chair of the Speaker’s Taskforce on Mental Health.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Burlington, commended Severson on helping to pass the “most comprehensive package of reforms on mental health in decades,” according to a statement.
State Rep. Dean Knudson, R-Hudson, said in a statement Severson brought “real-life experiences” from his time as a physician to the health committee.
“As a physician and chairman of the Assembly Health Committee, Rep. Severson’s medical expertise and leadership were key elements in the Assembly’s pursuit of health reform,” Knudson said in the statement.
Severson will continue to work at the Osceola Medical Center, according to the statement.
