UW-Madison establishes first fellowship to explore gender biases in biology

The University of Wisconsin-Madison will be the first in the nation—and possibly the world—to establish a fellowship based on exploring gender bias in biology.

The feminist biology endowed fellowship, which will be a part of the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies, will focus to include feminist approaches in biological theories and methods.

"Feminist analysis in science has already revealed and challenged scientific errors resulting from gender bias on the part of scientists, including ways in which observer bias distorted our understanding of primate behavior," Janet Hyde, director of the campus Center for Research on Gender & Women, said in a university release.

Caroline VanSickle will be the first postdoctoral fellow starting in September 2014. She will spend her two-year fellowship continuing her research regarding the change in pelvis shape throughout evolution, according to the release.
