A new report shows Wisconsin’s unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest point since November 2008.
The Department of Workforce Development announced new numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that estimate the state’s unemployment rate has fallen to 5.9 percent as of March 2014, according to a DWD statement Thursday.
The report showed the unemployment rate down from 6.1 percent in February. It also showed employment estimates showing the state gained 6,400 jobs between March and February.
DWD Secretary Reggie Newson said in the statement the report shows long-term economic development in the state.
"For the first time in over a half-decade, Wisconsin's unemployment rate has dropped below 6 percent, and that's because our state's labor force and employment have increased and unemployment has decreased,” Newson said.
The DWD secretary position is filled by gubernatorial appointment with the consent of the state Senate.
