A 19-year-old downtown Madison woman using Craigslist to find a subletter found herself the victim of fraud last Saturday, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain in an incident report.
The woman emailed back and forth with a Craigslist user by the name “Alexa Adams,” who said she was traveling from Switzerland to Madison to conduct medical research, according to the incident report.
For her move to the 200 block of West Lakelawn Place, “Alexa” claimed her boss would pay in one lump sum the cost of the rent, utilities and flights expenses, according to DeSpain.
With the check from the alleged boss, “Alexa” told the victim to deposit the rent money into her bank and wire the money for flight expenses to Switzerland, according to DeSpain.
When the Madison woman got to the bank, staffers told her the check was fake, according to DeSpain.
