The city of Madison and Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced Wednesday plans to reconstruct East Johnson Street.
The construction is scheduled to begin the week of May 5 and continue for six months, according to a city news release. It will affect the area between North Butler Street and North Baldwin Street.
WisDOT contracted R.G. Huston Company to work on the project, according to the release.
The construction includes new asphalt pavement, concrete curbs and gutters, storm and sanitary sewers, water main pipe, traffic signals, street lights and driveway aprons.
One lane of traffic will remain open during heavy traffic hours, according to the statement. Severe traffic delays are expected during peak traffic times with some delays also expected during non-peak times.
According to the release, an alternate route for Johnson Street is located through Bassett Street, West Washington Avenue, the Outer Loop and East Washington Avenue.
All businesses in the area as well as pedestrian access to all businesses will stay open, according to the statement. Motorists are encouraged to use other forms of transportation.
Madison Metro will detour routes and limit stops on East Johnson Street, according to the release.
The City of Madison Traffic Engineering Division will provide online traffic cameras to monitor traffic, according to the statement.
