UPDATE 5/2/2014 4:50 p.m.: Police confirmed a double homicide and officer-involved shooting that took place on East Washington Avenue Friday, leaving two dead and one victim in stable condition, during a Madison Police Department press conference.
When police arrived at the 2716 E. Washington Ave. apartment, one stabbing victim was found dead. The second victim was sent to the hospital and died en route due to stab wounds, according to Madison Police Department spokesperson Joel DeSpain.
DeSpain said the scene of the crime was very “fluid” and still active when police officers arrived. The suspect who was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries was shot by police, according to DeSpain.
The third stab victim was able to escape the scene and seek help from another individual who allegedly called police. The third victim’s wounds were not life threatening, and the victim is in “stable” condition, according to DeSpain.
A child was also in the apartment but avoided injuries by hiding in the residence, according to DeSpain.
MPD Chief Mike Koval said the internal investigation is being conducted by the Division of Criminal Investigation to comply with the newly passed statewide officer-involved shooting law which is also standard MPD policy.
Police could not confirm the motive for the crime since the investigation is still ongoing. The names of the victims could not be released, according to DeSpain.
