Madison police have reason to believe two separate incidents involving the assault and robbery of Madison residents are linked because of the similarity in suspect descriptions and close vicinity, according to Madison Police Department Lt. Amy Schwartz.
Police first responded to a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday for a battery on North Breese Terrace, according to a report from MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain.
The 23-year-old victim told police he was walking near Camp Randall Stadium when two young black men approached him, according to Schwartz. The suspects punched the victim in the head and nose without any verbal exchange.
The victim was able to flee the attack and avoid a possible robbery, according to the report.
Police received another call approximately 30 minutes after the first incident regarding a robbery on University Avenue, according to Schwartz.
The second victim was a 51-year-old Madison man who told police he was walking down University Avenue when two young black men asked to borrow his cell phone. The victim declined to offer his cell phone and was then attacked, according to the report.
The two suspects punched the victim repeatedly and stole his phone at a nearby bus stop, according to the report. The 51-year-old victim was treated at a nearby hospital after the incident.
