State Assembly candidate drops out of race after “hurtful” comments

Jacob Dorsey, a 19-year-old candidate for the Wisconsin State Assembly, dropped out of the race after offensive comments surfaced on the Internet, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article.

The Janesville Republican posted on Twitter and YouTube what he acknowledged were “hurtful” statements in the past few years. The most recent comments included negative words against black and gay people as well as a curse word in a YouTube comment referencing Abraham Lincoln.

Dorsey also posted derogatory comments in December following a ruling in support of same-sex marriage in Utah. He issued an apology for these comments last week, according to the Journal Sentinel.

“I have decided to withdraw from the race due to insensitive remarks that have surfaced from years past,” Dorsey said in a statement to The Janesville Gazette. “This race has been extremely hard on my family and myself.”

Dorsey’s campaign materials could not be found online.

The Rock County Republican Party asked him to apologize and return a donation the Rock County Party had made, according to The Gazette.

Dorsey’s name will remain on the ballot in November.
