In this past school year, statewide evaluations show Wisconsin schools and school districts demonstrate the majority of students met or exceeded expectations in student achievement and academic engagement, according to a Department of Public Instruction report released Tuesday.
The statewide “report cards” evaluate student achievement in reading and writing based on statewide tests, student growth, closing gaps for reading and math achievement and postsecondary readiness. The 2013-’14 report cards made technical adjustments to the calculations to improve correctness and equity, according to a statement. The Milwaukee Public Schools failed to meet academic expectations.
“We are absolutely dedicated to evaluating and improving school and district report cards; making sensible adjustments and adding new measures of accountability when they are available,” state Superintendent Tony Evers said in the statement.
DPI officials cautioned against comparisons between evaluations of past years because changes in student accountability may be from variations in calculation of scores rather than student achievement.
