Wisconsin junior Lauren Chypyha fell in three sets in the opening round of the Riviera Women’s All-American tennis championships Saturday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Virginia’s Maci Epstein fended off Chypyha in the three-set battle, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Epstein compiled 24 wins last season for the Cavaliers while beating two ranked opponents.
After accumulating 27 wins last season and finishing the year ranked No. 17 in the ITA Midwest Regional rankings last season, it became no surprise that Chypyha was named to the 2014 All-Big Ten women’s tennis team.
Every year, this prestigious tournament selects the most outstanding college tennis players in the country and has recently become an elite event. Chypyha became the first women’s tennis player to be selected from Wisconsin for this tournament since Caitlin Burke in 2006.
The loss puts Chypyha at a 5-3 record for this season, but she faces her next challenge at the University of Georgia Invite, beginning Friday, Oct. 10.
