Seven Madison businesses reported receiving fraudulent phone calls from someone claiming to be Madison Gas and Electric in the past few days, according to a Thursday Madison Police Department incident report.
The fraudulent caller told victims they were behind on paying their utility bills and the company would cease providing services if the victims did not immediately pay, according to the report.
Several businesses reported receiving calls from the same phone number, (855)858-2577, but none fell for the scam.
Businesses that received calls include Mickies Dairy Bar, Gates and Brovi, New Orleans Take Out, Merchant, Green Owl Cafe, Shell gas station and Forever Yogurt, according to the report.
The targeted businesses were all located on Monroe Street, Pinckney Street, Atwood Avenue, East Washington Avenue and State Street.
