The state government released new data indicating Wisconsin taxpayers have paid $1 billion on the state’s voucher schools, while Kenosha’s state representative claimed Monday there is no accountability for the “squandered” money.
Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca, D-Kenosha, criticized the Republican decision to cut public education spending in a statement saying the results have devastated Wisconsin students.
“It is time to recognize the Republican voucher scheme for what it is—a failed experiment that has wasted taxpayer dollars and has not improved educational outcomes,” Barca said in the statement.
Gov. Scott Walker’s cuts to education were made in part to balance the state’s dire budget in 2011. Walker invested in private schools and the state’s voucher system to support his idea that every student should have access to great education despite where they live.
Barca vowed in the statement that Assembly Democrats would fight for an increase in spending for public schools in the coming session.
