Conservatives vie for Grothman’s Senate seat

With newly elected U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wis., vacating his state Senate seat and heading to Washington D.C., a special election will soon determine who will represent the 20th District in Wisconsin’s next Senate session.

State Rep. Duey Stroebel, R-Saukville, Ozaukee County Board Chairman Lee Schlenvogt, and Calumet County Board Supervisor Ralph Prescott have all announced their intent to run for the seat.

Schlenvogt has 25 years of local political experience and though he expects to be outspent by his opponents, he says that his advantage lies in his connection with his constituency.

“I am one of these people, I am one of the regular constituents in this district”, Schlenvogt said .

Hoping to pursue policies in line with conservative beliefs, one of Schlenvogt’s top priorities is an overhaul of the welfare system, with an emphasis on early vocational training.

Stroebel brings experience from both the public and private sectors and is the only one of the declared candidates with political experience at the state level, having served in the state Assembly since 2011.

Highlighting his record of low taxation during his time as Calumet County Board Supervisor, and 40 years as a small business owner, Ralph Prescott’s platform for candidacy is rooted in his desire for economic reform, according to a press release.

All three candidates have aligned themselves with the outgoing Grothman, and each has promised to build on Grothman’s conservative record. The date of the election has yet to be determined. Gov. Scott Walker is scheduled to set the date when Grothman officially resigns.
