The Department of Natural Resources is calling on hunters from various Wisconsin counties to help the state track chronic wasting disease, according to a Tuesday press release.
Hunters from Adams, Juneau, Marathon and Portage counties have been asked to submit lymph node samples to test the deer for chronic wasting disease. The test is free and takes up to three or four weeks. The gun deer hunting season starts Saturday and lasts for nine days.
Additionally, any deer killed during the hunting period must be registered to where it was killed. This registration must take place before 5 p.m. on the day after the hunting season ends.
The DNR hopes that hunters will comply with the new regulations.
"We know hunters care deeply about the health of the deer herd, and routinely look for ways to assist the DNR with management," DNR wildlife biologist Josh Karow said.
