The Classified Staff Executive Committee discussed the possible effects of the upcoming state budget Thursday.
Classified Staff Chair Russell Kutz led a discussion surrounding a recent blog post by UW-Madison Chancellor Rebecca Blank providing an update on budget discussions.
The post describes Blank’s acknowledgment of a possible university-wide budget cut, leading the Associated Students of Madison to schedule a meeting with Blank Feb. 9, Kutz said.
The meeting would likely take place in Union South’s Varsity Hall, a venue large enough to also host members of the faculty, classified and academic staffs.
Separate from the shared governance meeting, Kutz said UW-Madison Journalism Professor Jo Ellen Fair “urged” Blank to meet with members of ASM to allow students to share viewpoints on the budget cuts.
Kutz said the chancellor needs to work with all parts of shared governance once the budget is released Feb. 3.
“We need to watch out for them as well as watch out for ourselves,” Kutz said. “If the faculty aren’t here, we’re not going to be here. The same thing with the students: if the students aren’t here, the faculty won’t be here, it’s a snowball effect.”
