The Associated Students of Madison expressed concern Wednesday that the UW System could now increase student fees and lower the rate of accepted in-state students after Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed $300 million cut to the System.
While there have been no talks surrounding where the fee increases would come from, the System would have the authority to raise various student fees, ranging from residence halls to ticket prices, according to Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch.
Huebsch said in a statement the granted autonomy would permit the System to increase non-resident and resident student admissions, potentially decreasing the number of in-state students accepted.
“Students and their families must urge state policymakers to keep the costs of attendance affordable for every current and future UW-Madison student, in order to ensure accessible and affordable higher education.” ASM Vice Chair Derek Field said in a statement.
