A professor of biology and evolutionary anthropology from Duke University is scheduled to deliver the keynote address Thursday in honor of Darwin Day, a day honoring the father of evolution.
Anne Yoder will speak in the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery’s DeLuca Forum about her research on the lemurs of Madagascar, focusing on the island as a unique “experiment” in isolation that houses a surprising amount of variation in species, according to a university press release.
The island and isolation theme will be further explored later in the day with a screening of “Jurassic Park” at the Marquee Theatre in Union South, followed by a discussion of the movie’s scientific and ethical issues, according to the release.
An evolution education forum in which teachers and administrators from different levels of education will speak about teaching evolution is scheduled to kick off the day in the Genetics-Biotechnology Center. Assistant professor of Wildlife Ecology Jonathan Pauli’s talk about how mammal populations respond to human disturbances will follow.
