High speed chase results in multiple charges

UW Police Department engaged in a 20-minute high-speed chase Thursday at 2:20 a.m., resulting in the arrest of a Madison man, according to a UWPD press release.

UWPD Public Information Officer Marc Lovicott said the department received a report about a vehicle swerving and running through stop signs. UWPD officers located the vehicle on Monroe Street and Woodrow Street and tried to conduct a traffic stop.

Driver of the vehicle, Brent A. Tibbetts continued to drive off. He reached speeds of 100 mph. Tibbetts drove through yards and came into close proximity of many moving and parked vehicles, Lovicott said.

“We worked with the Dane County Sheriffs office and deployed some spike strips on the road and that’s what disabled the vehicle, and the driver fled,” Lovicott said.

The car chase ended at Whenona Drive at Warwick Way, near Seminole Highway near the beltline. A UWPD officer chased Tibbetts on foot and seized him. Lovicott said no individual harm or damages were reported.

Tibbetts was arrested on charges of resisting/obstructing an officer, knowingly fleeing an officer, second-degree recklessly endangering safety, resisting arrest, speeding and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He is now in the Dane County Jail.
