Madison police respond to shots fired near West Towne Mall

Police responded to multiple reports of gunshots heard in the vicinity of West Towne Mall Saturday evening.

The incident began around 5:37 p.m. inside the mall as a physical disruption among “a small group of people,” Madison Police Department Lt. Kelly Donahue wrote in a report. The group then moved to a parking lot outside the building where one subject fired a shot. There are no reported injuries.

Police believe several more shots may have followed as the subject left the area, Donahue wrote.

Though all subjects fled the area prior to MPD’s arrival, police think the incident likely resulted from an ongoing dispute between subjects who all know each other, according to the report.

Police put the mall under lockdown following the disturbance, but the building has since been reopened, Donahue said.
