UW-Madison police found no danger inside Memorial Union early Friday morning after shutting down the surrounding area for several hours due to a bomb threat.
Shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, UWPD issued a WiscAlert to university students and staff warning them of a bomb threat at the union and asking them to stay away from the area. UWPD and Madison police officers cleared a perimeter around the building and shut down Langdon Street between Park and Lake Streets.
Police dispatched a K-9 unit to sweep the area, which was finished just after 3 a.m. After finding nothing within the area, the police then left the scene and reopened Langdon to traffic.
UWPD Lt. Aaron Chapin said the sweep took a long time to complete because of the size of Memorial Union, but he expects the building to open for regular business hours Friday.
Campus police will conduct an investigation into the source of the bomb threat and will partner with other departments to do so, Chapin said.
