Madison police arrested a 35-year-old homeless man for battery of a transgender woman on State Street early Friday morning.
Courtney D. Spinks punched a 23-year-old individual, who identifies as a transgender woman, on the 200 block of State Street, Madison Police Department Public Information Officer Joel DeSpain said in a statement. The victim, also homeless, suffered a facial fracture and needed multiple stitches.
Spinks and the victim are acquaintances, according to the police report. The victim told police the suspect made homophobic, derogatory remarks during the incident.
Police arrested Spinks for substantial battery with a hate crime enhancer.
