Wisconsin state representatives introduced a bipartisan bill Friday that would enable online voter registration in Wisconsin, according to a Monday press release.
The Elections Technology, Access and Security Bill would make Wisconsin one of 25 other states to allow online registration, which proponents of the bill say would strengthen the security of the registration process.
“Online voter registration will reduce the errors associated with traditional paper registrations,” state Sen. Devin LeMahieu, R-Oostburg, said in the release.
The bill would allow anyone with a valid driver’s license or identification card issued by the Department of Transportation to register online, allowing the DOT to forward a copy of that person’s electronic signature to the Government Accountability Board.
Potential voters would have to register online at least 20 days prior to an upcoming election for their application to be valid.
A public hearing on the bill is scheduled Tuesday before the Senate and Assembly elections committees.
