Wisconsin forward Andy Van Vliet will not play for the Badgers during the 2015-'16 season after the NCAA ruled him ineligible, the university announced Tuesday night.
According to a UW press release, “NCAA rules state that prospective student-athletes have one year to enroll in a collegiate institution following their high school graduation or expected graduation date. Van Vliet played basketball as an amateur outside of that one-year window, which has resulted in him sitting this season and losing a year of eligibility.”
UW had appealed the initial ruling, citing “factors outside of Van Vliet’s control” as the reason. However, the university learned Tuesday that the waiver had been denied and the original ruling upheld, meaning that Van Vliet will be unable to suit up for the Badgers this season.
The 6-foot-11 Belgium native, who signed his letter of intent last July, will have to sit out the remainder of this season, but will be able to return next year as a sophomore with three years of collegiate eligibility remaining.
