Wisconsin’s 2015 gun deer season resulted in three deaths and looks to be the deadliest in the past five years, with only one death having resulted in the prior five years’ hunting seasons combined, according to the Wausau Daily Herald.
A 35-year-old woman killed a 39-year-old man when she accidentally pulled the trigger while grabbing a nearby gun. A 56-year-old hunter was killed by a stray bullet, and an unidentified 50-year-old man was suspected to be killed by an accidental weapon discharge.
According to the Department of Natural Resources’ website, the main reason for the accidents is that hunters appeared to violate fundamental rules of firearm safety: “Treat every firearm as if it is loaded; Always point the muzzle in a safe direction; Be certain of your target and what’s beyond it; and Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot.”
The nine-day deer hunting season accounts for more than one-third of Wisconsin’s gun-related accidents, according to the Wausau Daily Herald.
