The Associated Students of Madison Equity and Inclusion Committee met Monday to update members on the committee’s plans to improve inclusion on campus.
Chair Mariam Coker and Vice Chair L.J. Alexandre-Strong focused the meeting around campaigns the committee is planning for the coming year.
One major campaign the committee will begin this semester is Shadow Day, where incoming marginalized students are paired with a similar student on campus to show them places that are not on general tours, like the Multicultural Student Center, and to connect them with students and faculty to help inform their college decision.
Coker also introduced the Cultural Competency campaign, which will contain a module similar to AlcoholEdu that deals with different aspects of racism to show students ways they can make their actions more inclusive.
Coker and Alexandre-Strong also opened the meeting up to suggestions from members on what they hoped to achieve by being a part of the committee.
Committee member Matt Wulf said the committee needs to talk with people who disagree with what they are trying to achieve.
“We end up preaching to the choir a lot of times,” Wulf said. “The inclusive cultural competency program is a great step to talk with people who don’t want to have those uncomfortable conversations.”
