The Madison Police Department arrested 22-year-old John M. Berrios, Monday at an AT&T store for attempting to purchase $3,000 worth of merchandise with fake identification, according to an incident report.
The suspect entered the AT&T store at 406 S. Gammon Rd. and attempted to purchase two iPad Minis and two iPhone 6s with a pre-existing customer account belonging to a man from Charleston, S.C. At the checkout desk, Berrios produced an identification card and a debit card, both of which belonged to the legitimate AT&T customer from South Carolina.
The store clerk determined that the presented identification card was fake when he noticed the age of the customer on the card was 59 and the suspect, Berrios, was clearly in his early 20s.
The store clerk proceeded to call MPD and Berrios was immediately taken into custody. He was charged with two counts of Misappropriation of Personal Identifying Materials and Resisting and Obstructing Justice.
Several similar fraud cases at AT&T on E. Washington have been reported to MPD in the past year.
